28 Things in 28 Years

Posted

Last year I did a blog post about 27 things I’d learnt in 27 years and for some reason it seems to be quite popular, so as I turned 28 this month, I thought I’d do a follow up – 28 in 28!

  1. I’ve been converted by eReaders. Paper books still have their place and I prefer my comics/graphic novels in that format, but the ability to store hundreds of books in such a small device is too good to ignore!
  2. The best quote I’ve heard this year came from my favourite film this year (so far) Kick Ass 2. The quote in question is said by Colonel Stars and Stripes (played fantastically well by Jim Carrey): “I try to have fun. Otherwise, what’s the point?”. I love that attitude and think it should be applied as often as possible into everyday life.
  3. Britain’s environment minister thinks climate change is false and that scares me! How do these people get into jobs like that? http://goo.gl/cAkVK
  4. I’ve not bought it yet, but I’m convinced that once I do, GTAV will stop me leaving the house for at least a month!
  5. You can tell a lot about a person from their answer to this question: “Who recorded the song ‘Jump’?” Van Halen / Girls Aloud.
  6. You can never truly win an argument on the Internet, so don’t try!
  7. I hope they go back to the classic style of posters for Star Wars: Episode VII as I loved the look of the original trilogies posters and the posters for the prequel trilogy didn’t feel the same! On a related topic, Star Wars: Episode VII can’t come soon enough! Star Trek has had it’s fun over the past few years but now it’s time for a real sci-fi series to show everyone how it’s done! (Awaits angry replies from Trekkies).

  8. This is still my favourite blog post of the year and I wish more people wrote this truthfully about this kind of stuff: http://ahmetalpbalkan.com/blog/8-months-microsoft/
  9. Koalas aren’t always cute! http://www.thedailyweird.com/animals/wet-koala/
  10. Drowning doesn’t look like drowning: http://mariovittone.com/2010/05/154/
  11. Despite Microsofts recent backtracks and changes with the XBox1, I’m convinced that the PS4 is still going to win the next-generation console war. Don’t get me wrong, the XBox1 won’t fail, but the PS4 will be the bigger seller. An £80 lower price point is a big factor when both consoles are very similar to each other.
  12. The saying “Don’t count your chickens…” in Danish becomes “Don’t sell the rug before you’ve shot the bear.” They’re obviously badasses!
  13. In my experience, most people don’t listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. Try not to be one of those people as you’ll end up learning far more in the long run.
  14. 2013 is the first time since 1987 that all four digits of the year have been different. This represents a 25% increase in password security as many people use their year of birth in their passwords.
  15. Something I’m trying to do more of is to offer praise in public, and offer criticism in private.
  16. I’ve come to the realisation that if a song is full of double-entendre and innuendo I’ll almost certainly like it.
  17. Doing something and getting it wrong is at least ten times more productive than doing nothing.
  18. Patience is a virtue – I’m not sure many people think like that in the age of the Internet.
  19. Don’t be scared of the dentist. The years of training they have to endure means you should trust what they’re doing. Bonus fact – I once had a filling without having had my mouth numbed first – that was scary!
  20. Choosing to do something out of your comfort zone can be really scary but it can also be the most rewarding, so don’t think about it too much, just go for it!
  21. This video of Stephen Fry talking about swearing is one of the best things ever!
  22. Prashad Cookbook: Indian Vegetarian Cooking is one of the best written cookbooks I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning! It’s not only filled with lovely recipes, but it’s written in a really easy to follow way and the layout, colour and typefaces used throughout pleases the design-nerd inside me!

  23. It seems strange that we’re still using USB connectors when they’re quite badly designed. By which, I mean have you ever managed to put one in right on the first try?
  24. One of the worst pieces of advice you can give someone about dating or job interviews is to say “Just be yourself.” This advice is useless because it’s uselessly tautological, with a massively faulty baked-in assumption. It assumes that the only reason any person is unsuccessful is because they are not honest. The truth is that there are legions of honest but socially-awkward people with bad fashion sense, crummy haircuts, fixable hygiene issues or any other number of undesirable traits who are told this useless advice. Berating them for a defect they don’t possess is confusing, and makes the insecure among them feel worse about themselves, amplifying their lack of confidence (which could be the actual reason for their lack of success with others), which then feeds upon itself! If you’re going to give advice then take the time to say something helpful rather than something useless.
  25. You know what they say, seen one baby, seen them all. So please stop with the Facebook baby pics! Failing that, this is a lifesaver! http://unbaby.me/
  26. Go to Youtube. Find a video. Pause it. Type 1980. Press play. You’re welcome.
  27. One of the greatest challenges in life is being yourself in a world that’s trying to make you like everyone else.
  28. I wish I had hair as awesome as Olli Herman from Reckless Love! Also their new album is one of the best things released this year so if you like your glam rock music, it’s worth checking out!
